nwh 36,964. Washington, October 23. 1874. My Dear Professor Ward,
I wrote you yesterday in refer-
-ence to the important hint thrown out by you concerning Mr Brooks. I have since then had a conversation with Prof Henry, & ^at his suggestion^ in addition I send the last volume of the Smithsonian Contributions & the last two of the Miscellaneous Collections. Please return these when you have made use of them as you think best. It may be well to call Mr Brook's attention to the fact - that no better monument can be erected to the memory of any individual than an endowment for the publica- -tion of reports of Scientific researches. The Smithso- nion books carry the name of the founder of this establishment throughout - the world, & serve to perfect= uate his memory. A special endowment might be made by Mr Brooks for the publication of works on particular subjects, all of which would bear on their face the statement that they were published at his expense.
