Kaffirs for preponderate. Have five villages of thatched huts with mud floor. On very friendly terms with English, whose teams they drive. herd flocks, hunt game, ^must disarm in [illegible]^. Droves of antelope and Zebra. Baboons in m[illegible] patches. ^[illegible]^ Secretary Birds kill serpents and are protected. I got permit at Newcastle. Went into Zulu Land. Saw monument to French Prince Imperial. His mother's pilgrimage. Mock combat with Zulus. ^Steamed to Port Elizabeth^. Adda Bush. Hunted Buffalo with Kaffir. Cape Colony reaches from Cape of Good Hope (Capetown) up to the Orange River, and from sea across to sea. A rather arid country, something like best parts of Utah or poorer parts of Texas. But are thriving towns with all comforts, and pretty farms. There ^are^ English or of direct English descent, and Africanders who are of mingled Boer and Portuguese and Kaffir origin, and Kaffirs and Hottentots. The English rule and make laws.
