Do you have the means of putting your
theoretical principles & book knowledge
to practice?
The class of '55 is all scattered. It made a
great debut in the world. It was the largest
Commencement gathering, I believe, on record,
at old Williams. Adams, Acker, Miller
& Hammer are in the Theological Seminary with
me; & Sibley, Foot, & Vander? are studying law,
here. Forbes is teaching in East Windsor Ct. & Lincoln
in Pittsfield. Washburn, Averill & Sandder are
in Andover Sem. Washburn said he was going
to write to you. Tomorrow the North Star sails
for Havre - Oh how I wish my passage was
engaged! But I can promise nothing but this
poor letter. A party of young ^Amherst^ fellows - among
them a classmate of mine at Williston Seminary
go to travel in the South of Europe.
I don't like to task you too much, but really
I do like to read your letters: they bring back
old times. The day I rec'd yours, I went to the
Astor Library and read some of the lectures
of ? de Beaumount on Natural History in French.
I liked them much. Remember me as ever your old true friend
in adversity as well as prosperity James Orton
