nwh New York City Oct. 11th 1855 My dear friend Ward --

       I imagine you

will be sorry to see this letter, for it seems to say that your friend Orton is still in America and probably destined to remain there, at least till Fortune smiles upon him. Last Tuesday I was sitting in my big arm-chair with Ollendorff in my lap and air-castles in my head - for I let my imagination carry me to Paris, and thought myself an eager listener of her learned Pro- fessors. I was roused from my delightful dream, by the entering of the Servant-girl bringing me a letter - from my old friend and companion <uWard</u> Left side of page not yet a ? from you. Do write me something by next mail. Edson a classmate of mine at Williams, is a "Professor" in Geneseo Academy. Top of page The Natural Hist. Soc? at Williams is very flourishing. Whenever you want to exchange that fossilfied slab you presented, I can get it. For as I have by my own unaided exertions obtained them a beautiful Temple at the cost of $5000. I have no little influence there. J. O.
