geologists. I am reading as I have time, the transactions of the society for former years & find them intensely interesting. I have also perused Siliman's journal for the last 4 or 5 years & find a great deal to please me. I am perhaps mistaken, but I do not think that there is the same atention paid to stratigrafly in America as here. I read two pieces which pleased me very little as I had been anxiously looking to see if the same lack of amity existed between American Naturalists as that which has often chilled one here. These articles were both attacks upon Prof. Emmons a gentleman whom I have ever had reason to love & respect. I think that the Professor has had some unhappy operations & conclusions in his recent work on Geology, but I think that nothing will excuse the spirit shown by his reviewer. H is not only unchristian, but it is </u unscientific >. He has not subscribed his name, but perhaps you already know him as T. S. Hunt of the Canada Geological corps. He told me of this & of many other articles which he had "amused himself in writing" at a meeting of the Geological society. I have read many of his writings & heard him speak (in French), and can not but admire his talent, but he is really one of the most conceited persons with whom I have ever met.
