nwh Cambridge May 10, 1879. Dear Prof. Ward,

       The last shipment

came a day or two since & has been unpacked & passed in review - The birds, the turtles & the mammals - in short - everything - except the Bear came safely. The Bear unfortunately was fastened by only one screw, & that chanced to have not a very firm holding - place, so that when the box containing it was opened he was found to be completely loose - & had evidently made most of the journey that way. The hair was worn off a small place on the top of the back at the shoulders, & one (the left) ear ^was^ ground off nearly even with his head. In other respects he seemed
