Cartagena, August 21, 1873 Prof. Henry A. Ward Rochester

Dear Sir, The answer to your letter of June 31, requesting information about the "Manatee" or Sea Cow, I can only inform you that I am aware that this animal is found in the vicinity of the Sinu River, which some 60 miles from this city, to its mouth.

The Manatee is found in the River itself and in lakes near the River. But I do not think they are numerous, because I have traveled and not a little on that River and never saw one. I understand however that there are factors who make it their business to catch this animal at a lake some 100 miles from the mouth of the River. The present is said to be the best season for catching the animal, but it is not the most agreeable for traveling in the country owing to the rains which out to prevail (but do not)
