Sept.74 "Glen Iris" Portageville P.O., N.Y. Aug 24th, '76 Prof. Henry A. Ward No. 2 College Avenue Rochester, N.Y. Dear Sir,

   I learned last

evening from Prof. Smith, Principal of the Female Seminary at Pike, and Chairman of the Committee having charge the remains of the Mastodon, that little else had been done to the bones found, than to varnish them with a coating of glue. I strongly urged upon Mr. Smith the importance of placing them at once in the charge of a scientist, and he agreed with me, without he was over ruled from doing so, to at once forward to you at Rochester by U.S. Express. the bones packed in saw dust. Each tusk will be packed ^in^ a separate box and such fragments of tusk as it is not known to which they belong, will be sent in a separate package and marked as doubtful.

I told Mr. Smith that I would be

responsible to you for putting the bones in a good condition
