Mr. Smith and myself will be greatly obliged if you will place them in the hands of a competent person and instruct them to be properly preserved and then packed away with care, awaiting further instructions. After your return from Europe and the East we will again take up the subject. Will you please be particular to have the smallest fragments preserved.

    Please direct the bill of charges to be sent

to me and I will remit at once for the same. As I have no authority to make any expenditures and do so only in promotion of the general interest, you will please cause no further expense to be made than is necessary to put the bones in the very best state of preservation, putting, perhaps, the broken fragments of the tusks together.
