April 1/81 Dear Prof. Ward.
Yours of Feb 22 is just at hand and instructions in regard to the possible display at San Francisco noted. Scott was in here last week and saw the Elephant. He thought it very fine and I do not know but what you can charge $300 extra for it in exchange for the one at Princeton. Have unpacked Gerrard's lot. It is a small one but most of the skins are good. He also sends by request a number of skins on approval and I am just making out a list of them to send to Prof. Allen. The R. has small horns but it will not do to get very large ones for it. It is R. sumatranus, the two-horned Sumatran Rhinoceros; also found on the mainland. Prof. Baird sent instructions not to mount his Whale skeleton, but to articulate the flippers, put the head together and bore holes in the vertebrae for the back
