Sterling Montana, Oct 10th 1879

                               Dec. 7

Dear Professor

    Your letter of Sept 14th is before

me. I think I can assure you that another season, will find me prowling around the Geyser region, & if possible to secure the mineral specimens you wish, with safety, will attempt it. though Supt. Norris is a keen scented & vigilent watchman.

      It would have been quite too late for

a trip there this fall; You know the region is on the head waters of the Madison, at a higher altitude, by a considerable, than this, & snow does fall there early in Oct. & already several parties have been caught, much to their discomfort. There is a time though, when no one goes up there on a/c of the myriad of musquitoes, Gnats, & flies. - early in July. - & then would be the time for a specimen hunter to slip in. Should I go. I should go before others think of starting It seems to me, some further fastening
