The chronological distance between
the above date and that of your letter suggests a spirit of disobedience to your reasonable request that I should reply promptly, which I certainly have not done for various reasons, though my intention was good enough. It seems that we are destined not to get away together in spite of your numerous invitations. I am here for a couple of weeks accor- ding to an agreement made with my wife some time ago. During this period some alterations and Decorations to my house will be in progress, to be finished after our return. On the 19th promised I am to serve as petit juror in the Court of Oyer & Terminal, which, I believe, has to do with murder cases and other dreadful crimes.
