                                                              July 1 / 83

Dear Prof. Ward,

    Your letter came last evening

and I presume the books will be on hand to- morrow. They shall be attended to as you direct I will try to write up the U. S. N. M. and will do it cheap. I had a grand illustrated article planned but heaven disappointed me by giving the photographer a stomach ache. I was going to write on attitudes of animals and Mr. Hornaday and Mr. Smillie were going to supply some illustrations by means of life photos from the Phila. Zoo. At the critical time week before last Mr. S. had a touch of Cholera Mulus and the scheme is upset until Fall. I have out- lines for a number of notes and will at once set to work. How much Bulletin material have you on hand and when do you begin to "set em up" ? Did Mr Baker go out on the S. & S. Survey? I had supposed so until Maj. Powell told me there was no such man on it. Yours very truly Fred A. Lucas.
