Alfred Centre, Feb. 3. 1880.

Dear Father,

I received your letter to day, but tore the enclosed envelope in opening the letter; this mail does not leave till four P.M. tomorrow. I am kept pretty busy with my studies, principally Rhetoric, Art, and Elocution. The boys in the Debate and elsewhere, seem to like and respect me, also the ladies, as far as I can judge. We write a great many essays and exercises, so that I need many references. Miss. Allen, the Elocutionist was married about five weeks ago, but expects to return shortly when she will give me extra lessons in elocution, vocal gymnastics &c. Mrs. Allen is extremely anxious to have a few rich plumaged birds, South American, I suppose.

Text at top, sidewise: Mrs. Allen gives the following list of materials I need at once for this term. My art teacher is quite artistic.
