Dear Prof. Ward,
I will take this time
to answer one or two questions in your letter of Dec 24 which were not replied to because your letter was temporarily mislaid. Am sorry the Macleay lot did not go on sooner, but under the circumstances we all learned it best to retain them. We did not take all of Mr. Barrow's specimens because we could not afford it and because he did not wish to sell. As I believe I wrote you the skins remain as they were & I've even forgotten just what change I proposed. The Gorilla skeleton was mounted last January and as we now have a second on hand it will be too bad to have the first returned. "This is not a Museum, but a working Establishment, where all" want money badly. The small Hippo- potamus was purchased from you. Martens stuffed it nearly or quite two years ago. I do not know of anything from California that we would like more than </u Lynx fasciatus > which is needed for M. C.Z. and which seems difficult to procure.
