Dear Prof. Ward,
Your letter of the 8th came
to hand yesterday and I have carefully noted the various points in it. I too should be very loath to leave unless I felt assured that I could permanently secure a much better place than I now occupy, although as far as foremanship goes you could doubtless find a better man to look after the men. Still I accomplish a certain amount there from the fact that most of them like me. But it is a rather hard matter to work up to be foremen among the very men when I used to help, and who can remember all the "pick-up" work I used to do. I am rather glad that the matter has come up at this time, as it affects my Mother's movements some; she having talked of coming to R. this winter in the event of selling the house. I think with you that it will be better for me to go down to Princeton if possible in order to get a better idea of what would be expected of me. & in order that Mr. Scott could form some idea as to how he would like me & what he might think my worth to him.
