just when I was congratulating myself upon the prospect of being able to do you some service. It is a trifle discouraging. I can cheerfully submit to any amount of criticism when it is in the least merited., but when you deliberately charge me with omitting Aus- tralia & </s comm > travelling half way round the world col - lecting nothing " -- purely from </u choice >, it is simply too much for common flesh & blood to bear quietly.
Since you particularly desire that I shall
not reach Rochester during your absence, I will make it a point to wait here until you return a few days hence. But I cannot with propriety remain here later than the 27th. Please let me know when you will return to Rochester so that I may, in a measure, time my own movements accordingly. I will try to be prepared to stand fire at 12 paces for the Democrat man & answer ques- tions until one or both of us go down.
No more at present.
Yours very truly Wm T. Hornaday.
