where it will arrive in 2 weeks, & have taken the _____ in which we hope to again reach Syene in 3 or 4 days. We shall probably finish Nubia in a month, and get back to Cairo in two weeks more. Farther than that I cannot say although I presume Syria will next undergo investigations. I am quite anxious to stop at Suez, on our way across the desert, and take a boat down the Red Sea to [Tor?] and thence to Mt. Sinai. But I will not anticipate my trip for, the truth is, we know little about it ourselves, except that we intend to travel until our money is spent, and to look out for the warm weather, which is fast coming on. We find the heat at midday decidedly annoying here, and I do not know what we may expect when we cross the “tropic of cancer” in Nubia. I find the trip a splendid one in the way of study. As I have already mentioned, we have lots of books and I study incessantly. There are about 50 Americans upon the river besides ourselves and at least 100 English & French. Of course we visit among them when we lie up at the bank at night, and I have thus formed some very pleasant acquaintances. We also fire salutes when passing any boat, or when leaving a town where any lie. I was much pleased yesterday
