Thebes Feb. 10th 1855

My dear Sister E.

I wrote to M. 2 weeks since & hardly feel able to write again so soon but I remember my promise to you and that it is 6 weeks since I wrote you from Cairo. When I wrote M. I was bound south on this seemingly interminable river the Nile. And now, after 2 weeks sail I am not as near my goal as then by about 30 miles. The solution is as follows. We arrived at “Syene” about 10 days since but found it impossible either to take the “Lotus” over the cataract or to hire a small Dahabieh to go up to Wady Halfez. So, after a day spent very pleasantly where Juvenal was banished and in the temple where Caesar and Cleopatra used to promenade, we turned about, much disappointed at being thus cheated out Nubia. Here at Thebes however we found a boat at liberty which, although sufficiently large for comfort, would still pass the cataract. We at once sent our other down to Alexandria
