Prof: H. A. Ward.
Rochester, N. Y.
Dear Sir:

Your last lot of Bird's Eggs

came promptly to hand, and were all
in good condition, but I am sorry to
say, that you did not follow any instructions
which were in my last letter to you, it
I asked you not to send me the Eggs,
for I did not know whether I would
be able to make the payment of 19.70
which fell due on the 19th of Nov: and
now I know that I can not, for my
financial abilities have shrunk somewhat
of late, and as i have heretofore allways
kept my promises to you, I would
like to ask you if you would let me
pay off the whole amount (49.20) in weekly
sums of $2 each, or 8 each month, if you
could, it would greatly please me, for
I would otherwise have to return the
Eggs. Hoping to hear from you soon
I remain
Yours Very truly
A. Wuesthoff

Henry Augustus Ward Papers
A.W23
From 1862 to 1906, Ward’s Natural Science Establishment supplied specimens to natural science museums around the world. The goal of this project is to enable scientists, historians, and archivists to recreate Ward’s inventory by linking 19th century materials and documents at their institutions to the original catalogues, bulletins, and manuscripts.
Original line breaks, punctuation, abbreviations and spelling have been preserved
in the transcriptions and underlining and strikethroughs have been encoded.
Marginalia associated with a photograph or other ephemera has been transcribed
and associated with that object. Other marginalia is tagged "caption" at the
beginning of the relevant date's entry. Words or phrases deemed indecipherable
have been noted as "illegible." Nontextual original content, e.g. drawings and
diagrams, have been noted as such. Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

[vertically on left side Baker March '83]
Syracuse, Mch. 21, 1883.

Dear Prof. Ward.

The Doctor dislikes to have me go
to Rochester so perhaps I had best undertake the
work here. I think it would be well to delay
issuing the Catalogue till say July, for the reason
that you will be adding new species till the end of
the collecting season and the cat. ought not to be issued till they are in. I can now get the copy
all ready, and then Mr. Preston could add the
new species before sending to the printer. Shall
you arrange according to Coues' or the new Ridgway
list ? The latter seems to be generally adopted.
I enclose a list of catalogues, etc. which will be
needed, and which I would like to have sent
by express with some things which Mr. Preston
will send me. I hope to get a few eggs myself during the spring, and shall try to secure the
Prairie Dog skeletons which have so long been
wanted.

Enclosed is notice of Prof. Wilder's book. It will

probably be all I can do for the Bulletin, as this is the hardest kind of work for me.

The egg letters I shall have to retain a day
or two longer, as I wish to keep a list of the
eggs ordered - to use in making out catalogue.

I am glad to hear of the Musk Ox; suppose
Cambridge will have it, by right of prior order.

All is going well here - I vary but little
one way or the other. Am waiting with some im- patience for farther word from Mr. Gilbert, as
I cannot well leave here before hearing from
him, and I am anxious to get away as soon
as posible. I have had favorable news from several persons in the West regarding weather,
and it makes me uneasy.
Respectfully yours,
Arthur B.
