Prof Ward - Dear Sir !
At the time when I first
entered your employment everything looked promising.
After some time, however, considerable fault was
found about my workmanship upon mammals and birds.
I know that my methods is comparatively new to the
one, which you are now using; but it has great promi=
nence in Germany, Austria and Italy
I have studied anatomy for several years and claim
to have a fair knowledge of the same.
In mounting birds, it is my intention to put in a
body exactly the same size and pattern as the one
removed, - a rule, which through diligent study and
observation,, I have found to work with great
advantage.
My fishes, however. give good satisfaction and
consequently was kept in this. My method of
mounting fishes and whales is original.
The Royal Museum at Stockhalus exhibited two whales
at Berlin 1889 and one at London 1882-1883,
accompanied by a large number of fishes, all of
which I mounted, and they gave the greatest satisfaction
and received the most attention of all.
In writing you this letter I thought, I could explain
my wishes more thoroughly.

at present, - this is not the occasion of the letter.
I have a perfectly knowledge of the different methods
of mounting and I claim to own the best now used
in Europe. I desire to show you how well I can
mount birds and mammals by the methods I possess.
I am not so fast a workman as some, on account
my methods.
Yours affectionately

Dear Prof.

The orangs will be done by Friday

if we only get the stuff for the leaves in
time. if the group is to be by
that time, we cannot put in the
other (small) orang, for the reason that
it could not be stuffed by either William
or myself, and it any case it would
not be dry as soon as the others. The
more I study upon the orang and the place
we have for it, the more I am made to
fear that you would be disappointed in
it anyhow. The female is finished, and
looks , - much better than I had
expected. William did a good job with
that hair business, as good and as
rapidly., I am sure, as either M. Bailly
or I could have done to have saved our
necks, and if it should occur to you to
give William $2. or $3. as a "reward of
merit" I think he would appreciate it,
& you wouldn't lose anything either in
the long run. Your remark that it

to pat him on the back ever since to
keep him up to the mark.

If you still want that small orang

stuffed, send us a telegram to that
effect, & Mr Bailey or Marten's or
will have to do it. My reason for saying
"If you still want" it done, is because
you said, "Have Wm stick that hair on
first, so that if there is not time to spare
the young one can be left out. " It will
keep us both till Friday to get the
group fully done, for there are </u so many >
little things to be done one after another
before all, 4 specimens are ,

Brooks (of the ) goes away for

2 weeks next Saturday, & he is very
anxious to see the orangs before he goes.
I told him that I < /u thought > you would
want all the reporters to come

be so unpleasantness in any quarter.
Of course that cannot be until you
are here. But Brooks is a master

the limbs of the two trees on the left

in two places come out over the

that half is turned down upon its

Henry Augustus Ward Papers
A.W23
From 1862 to 1906, Ward’s Natural Science Establishment supplied specimens to natural science museums around the world. The goal of this project is to enable scientists, historians, and archivists to recreate Ward’s inventory by linking 19th century materials and documents at their institutions to the original catalogues, bulletins, and manuscripts.
Original line breaks, punctuation, abbreviations and spelling have been preserved
in the transcriptions and underlining and strikethroughs have been encoded.
Marginalia associated with a photograph or other ephemera has been transcribed
and associated with that object. Other marginalia is tagged "caption" at the
beginning of the relevant date's entry. Words or phrases deemed indecipherable
have been noted as "illegible." Nontextual original content, e.g. drawings and
diagrams, have been noted as such. Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Schmidt notes about WNSE staff
Notes from Ward's Staff list compiled by Karl Schmidt
Kirchoff would tease Eggleston saying “Eggleston is present but his soul is up the Genesee River” and when Eggleston would sit with mouth pursed up at his work, Kirchoff would draw a net and some fishes in it on the floor which would startle Eggleston when he looked around and cause him to curse about being shut up indoors and driven cuckoo by Kirchoff into the bargain. Eggleston was a friend of Denslow; very fond of the Genesee River and of fishing.

Schmidt notes about WNSE staff
Notes from Ward's Staff list compiled by Karl Schmidt
See March 15, 1932, Museum News, Introduction to article “Disarticulation of the Human Skull,” for biographical notes.
Came to U.S. in 1868, as technician to A.N.S.P. under Cope; worked also for Dr. Pepper at Philadelphia City Hospital, thence to Wards. First work was to sort out and remount 86 skeletons which had been mixed up-- they had been thrown out of the window when Ward’s first buildings burned up, caught below and some were in paper sacks which got wet. The first buildings were on the University campus.
Lucas credits Bailly for setting a high standard of osteological technique.
Bailly was born in Normandy, went to Paris as a boy, and worked in Natural History establishments there.
Bailly succeeded Pere Roque [Roche?], who was the first osteologist at Ward's, and who returned to France.
Bailly’s wife (married in France) spoke no English.
Bailly once returned to France, but came back. When he left, he was the highest paid employee, next to Lucas receiving $5.50 per day.
Came back at $3.00 and not being satisfied, looked for another job and went to McGill University where he stayed until he died.
Bailly mounted birds by the old French method of “soft filling.” De Kempeneer was the first at Wards to use the “hard body.” Webster also. Bailly made fun of De Kempeneer and Webster, calling their method the “pin cushion method.” Critchley’s birds were poor until he adopted the hard body. Bailly, however, from long experience, placed the legs rather well by the old process.
Ask John [Mayer?} about the soft method.

Schmidt notes about WNSE staff
Notes from Ward's Staff list compiled by Karl Schmidt
At the State Normal School at Brockport before coming to Rochester. Came to Wards in 1883. Began taxidermy at age of 11. Somewhat queer and in sanitarium for some time. Father insane. When he came, already set in his ways and ideas. Hence argued a good deal, and always wanted to be right, and could not be convinced against his opinion.
Never ate with rest, even outside he went to his own tree; though he sometimes joined Eggleston. Collected insects after lunch, and pinned them well, all from University Campus. He wanted to sell them to the University when he left Ward's. Denslow came from farm outside Rochester on the Dugway Rd. Eggleston used to go there Sundays to fish in the brook on the farm.
Went on Adirondack trip with Stedman (of Botany Dept., Cornell), who got up a party of about 14. Gueret, Eggleston, and Denslow ordered fishing tackle at once from N.Y., but Eggleston could not go (too poor) and Gueret decided against it on account of too much to carry. He wanted to go by boat instead of hiking. Denslow went. Denslow collected birds with sling shot. Was especially a bird taxidermist. Ate too much cornmeal on this trip and all got a queer diarrhea, trying to evacuate and could not, so had to give up this diet. Most dropped out. Stedman, Denslow, and 3 or 4 who were left, bought a boat on the Fulton chain of lakes and sold boat to good advantage when they were through. Had wonderful trout fishing, but Denslow would not use the fly rod except with lancewood tip off, to great disgust of his companions and of Eggleston when he came back. (Gueret still has the rod in 1936). Denslow got 3 pickerel on 3 casts with hand line and spoon on lake in this trip. Denslow was in Field Museum before 1900. He worked under Akeley and mounted the two Hyaena groups, together with a lot of individual mounts.
Went to American Museum from Field Museum to do birds. Apparently did the turkey with feathers transferred to wax. Married teacher, artist in oil painting, in Chicago, and Denslow took this up and quit taxidermy for oil painting. (Hartford, Connecticut)

Schmidt notes about WNSE staff
Notes from Ward's Staff list compiled by Karl Schmidt
Came about 1877. Born in Nottingham, England. Came to U.S. as small child. Went to same school as Edmund Gueret, the 14 school. Allen, the principal was not a college man but was a born teacher.
Allen went to the Free Academy as principal, the forerunner of the high school system, and became superintendent.
Schollich got Critchley the job at Ward's, his family being hard up (Critchley was younger than.Gueret but in same grade). Critchley was a real sissy, & played with girls and dolls and did fancy work.
He was thus naturally fastidious and hated maceration.
Critchley took naturally to taxidermy and was encouraged to Lucas, doing mostly birds.
When Akeley came he was placed under Critchley, and they became good friends. Critchley married Edmund Gueret’s sister. Owned a house and had his own shop in backyard where he and Akeley experimented.
Critchley’s niece was helped with high school studies by Akeley, and they became engaged. This made some trouble (Critchleys’ had old fashioned ideas) because Akeley refused to marry before he made his trip to Africa.
Critchley and Akeley wanted to go to A.M.N.H. from Ward’s, and this was spiked by Henry A. Ward.
Critchley hung on at Rochester but went at last to the general natural history business of Southwick & Jenks in Providence, Rhode Island.
When Jenks went insane, Critchley bought out the Jenks share, Southwick lending him the balance necessary.
Critchley was manager, and his Ward experience was very useful. Southwick ran the bookkeeping. The business flourished for ten or more years, until the bird protection laws interfered.
Their head taxidermist was a Mr. Angel, and Southwick and Critchley sold the business to Angel and a wealthy friend (of Angel’s.
Critchley went thence to the Brooklyn Museum, where he was taxidermist until his death in 1910.
At Ward’s Critchley once got it into his head that birds’ feet went the opposite of the actual condition, and as he took the feet off in mounting, he mounted five or six hundred birds with the feet transposed for the M.C.Z. [Museum of Comparative Zoology—Harvard]
Joel Asaph Allen accepted these, and they went into the exhibition collection. Edmund Gueret threw this up to Allen when they quarreled about the whale flippers.

Notes from Ward's Staff list compiled by Karl Schmidt
Famous animal artist.
Family lived in Rochester, his mother a widow, one brothers, Grant.
Came about 1891, left 1893.
Was an amateur taxidermist, & came especially to learn taxidermy. Went to Art Institute in Rochester, was skillful with pencil.
Drew bird in desired position for models. Stuck to birds, and did first rate work. H.A.W. advised him to take up drawing professionally.
An opossum of some species was wanted for an order, & Henry A. Ward wrote to Lucas in Washington for one, on an exchange deal with U.S.N.M. (Smithsonian) This did not come & H.A.W. had Bull draw an old man & dog & old gun & lantern & hollow tree on postcard, with words “Where is that possum?” to send to Lucas to remind him.
Very well liked by everyone. Very good friend of Joseph Santens.
Went to National Museum as taxidermist in 1893.
Voice good, and joined the Opera Club. Singing popular around the shop. E.G. [Edmund Gueret?] often went cycling with Charlie Bull (his brother had a bicycle shop). E.G. joined club and used to practice with Mrs. Bull (sr). Gilbert & Sullivan and such light operas were popular with this club. They gave a week in Rochester & one night stands in small towns.

Probably from Syracuse.
Came to Wards to be a Naturalist. (1878)
Lived at Ward House.
Foreman after George Wild, who succeeded Frederic Lucas. Studied very hard, often late at night, and after 3 years was threatened with consumption. Typical youngster who came to Wards to learn taxidermy. Thus he tried Bruce’s Taxidermy Establishment first, in Brockport, and found it unsatisfactory & came to Wards.
Akeley worked for John Walrus, taxidermist in New York, a rather poor place in the Bowery. (This just after he left Wards).
[Wheeler responsible for getting Akeley to Milwaukee and recognized his abilities. He probably intended to make a scientist out of him, but Akeley went his own way.
