Henry Augustus Ward Papers
A.W23
From 1862 to 1906, Ward’s Natural Science Establishment supplied specimens to natural science museums around the world. The goal of this project is to enable scientists, historians, and archivists to recreate Ward’s inventory by linking 19th century materials and documents at their institutions to the original catalogues, bulletins, and manuscripts.
Original line breaks, punctuation, abbreviations and spelling have been preserved
in the transcriptions and underlining and strikethroughs have been encoded.
Marginalia associated with a photograph or other ephemera has been transcribed
and associated with that object. Other marginalia is tagged "caption" at the
beginning of the relevant date's entry. Words or phrases deemed indecipherable
have been noted as "illegible." Nontextual original content, e.g. drawings and
diagrams, have been noted as such. Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Sydney, March 21st 1883.

March '83 [illegible] 21 [this line in different handwriting and ?in pencil]

Monsieur le Professeur H.A. Ward,

Cher Monsieur
J'ai reçu votre lettre dâtée du 2 Février, ainsi que les 2 bulletins, qui sont très intéressants, et pour lequel je vous remercie bien.

J'ai vu Mr J.C. Oakman, il y a trois semaines, et il m'a remis la lettre que vous lui aviez envoyé pour moi, et nous avons eu une longue causerie ensemble. Pour les Sharks je me suis mis à la recherche des pêcheurs, plusieurs fois je suis allé au marché au poisson, et deux fois je suis allé à 5 heures du matin à Woolloomooloo Bay où j'ai rencontré une demi douzaine de pêcheurs qui rentraient de la pêche avec une grande quantité de poissons; je les ai questionné et finallement proposé de me procurer des Sharks, ils m'ont dit que la pêche était très bonne pour le moment et qu'ils ne voudraient pas passer leur temps à attraper des Sharks, que cela ne les payait pas aussi bien;

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Dear Sir, It's only yesterday that I received your box with (containing?) the objects mentioned in your last letter; everything in good shape. The Montana bear(..?) is satisfactory but the fox and the beaver leave something to be desired (=not so good). Thank you for your two Episoctees(...? Episodes maybe?). Having bought from Wallace a nice bison skin and a Iquettette(..? Might be the word Jaquette/jacket very badly written). I think that'd be all for me today and thank you for always/again(?) for giving me the address to your agent in Paris who later maybe can receive (?) me. When you have rarities apart the ones you already mentioned, tell me and we'll do a new deal together. Very much yours

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.
