you write send via Victoria, V. I. as
especially during the summer we have more
frequent communication from Victoria than
from Portland - I have spoken to several
indians relative to Sea Otter Skeletons; the
great difficulty is that they have a
Superstition that unless they cut the heads
off when Killed, their canoes will be
lost. However I will do my best, I
will inquire the Price of Sea Otter skins
and will inform you per next mail -

in Sand Stone - they are of no value except
as a curiosity - I will collect specimens
of minerals etc and forward them with
description of locale etc - As yet there
has been no well defined vein of mineral
found in Southern Alaska. Nor do I believe
there are any - The resources of this
portion of Alaska have been greatly exaggerated
and underrated - according to the interests
of the writers - The Alaska Commercial Comp. -
and those employed by them as a matter of
course give it as dismal account as possible
& vice versa. Along the coast, main land
and on the Islands - grow to over
6 feet in dia -The Principal tree is the
Hemlock - the so called Alaska cedar
which is scattering and generally Knotty -
is a species of the Cupressus Con?

this season of the year, there is but little haul
up the Coast, and I will have to wait for
an opportunity. I will endeavor to procure you
a skeleton of Sea otter, as I have spoken to
an indian Sea otter hunter,
Skins sell here at very high prices owing to
Competition. Last Summer Sea otter brot from $80.00 -
to $125.00 - in barter. Silver fox as high as $80.00
and other furs in proportion. If I had the cash
I could procure them at less price.
As to procuring specimens etc this coming Summer
it would entail a considerable outlay of money,
and if business would not permit me to attend to it
I could procure ? men to attend to it.
