Prof. Ward.
Dear Sir, I have a few mammals and bird
skins, 10 in all, that I wish to have stuffed and mounted.
The skulls ^of the former^ have been entirely removed, but very carefully
done, and the specimens will require skillful<s>l</s> handling
so as to have the heads in proper shape. They come from the
Zoological Society of London, and doubtless you have had such
skins sent to you before, so that you can let me know with-
out seeing them whether you have a workman who is capable
of mounting them in a satisfactory manner.
None of the specimens are large, and, if your reply is satis-
factory, I will forward the stands, that are being made, in
the same case with the skins
Truly Your's

Henry Augustus Ward Papers
A.W23
From 1862 to 1906, Ward’s Natural Science Establishment supplied specimens to natural science museums around the world. The goal of this project is to enable scientists, historians, and archivists to recreate Ward’s inventory by linking 19th century materials and documents at their institutions to the original catalogues, bulletins, and manuscripts.
Original line breaks, punctuation, abbreviations and spelling have been preserved
in the transcriptions and underlining and strikethroughs have been encoded.
Marginalia associated with a photograph or other ephemera has been transcribed
and associated with that object. Other marginalia is tagged "caption" at the
beginning of the relevant date's entry. Words or phrases deemed indecipherable
have been noted as "illegible." Nontextual original content, e.g. drawings and
diagrams, have been noted as such. Images of the original diary pages are

<p>by the same mail as this, that was sent to the
office a short time before your last of Nov 30th came
to hand. I am glad to hear that the Elk
bones are ready and beg that you will express the

a post office order for $50 which is to pay for
the Elk. As those bones are ready I will not
think any more of the dromedary at present.
The small amount of $11.61 to my credit on your books
will be sufficient to bring the above sum to the quan-
tity necessary to pay for the Elk in full - viz $60, with
a balance for packing. I agree with you
freely that I ought to have the Dugong. but I am
a prudent man in many matters and only engage
to take what I can pay for. Perhaps after

The third collector has notified me that he

It is singular that the amphuimas are

them, with the instructions that you sug-

permitted to visit ant plantation with
the idae of digging in the cultivated fields
for these creatures. It is necessary for the
owner of the land or his agent to see that
they are secured when the soft mud in the
bottom of the rice field ditches is being shov-
elled out and I know of acres of such having
been cleaned and not one sirin or amphuima
found. I was written to by ?Sclater of
the Zoological Society of London with the request
that some living ones be sent him, and received a
dozen from ? river which were forwarded about
a month ago. They were not large though, and if
I had sent a keg of alcohol there for you, I
may have only been able to send you medium
sized ones. It is evident that they are either not
over abundant, or we have not yet found out exactly
the localities to search for them. I think that the season
is now over for this year, but will have as

<p>nwh Charleston S. C. 28th Apl 1881 Mr Frederic A. Lucas Dear Sir, Professor Ward wrote me before leaving for Australia ask ing that I have some sirens and am- phuima collected for him this spring, about 50 of each. I now send you by express today one keg containing 27, of which some few are amphuima They cost 10 cts a piece and vary from 15 to 18 inches in size. I think that you will find them satisfactory, but you had better examine them as soon as received, as they may require more alcohol. I will send you another keg in about a month and then we can balance our account I hope you wrote to Prof Ward</p>

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

<p>nwh Charleston, S. C. 22nd Oct 1879 Dear Professor, If the Secretary bird is already stuffed and you think that its want of freshness will not be very notice- able, I will take it., but for the Adjutant, to take it would only be to have a second one. The amount of $60 can then be filled out with certain other birds of the order "Grallatous". The whooping crane would be a good specimen, or the sand-hill crane. Or if you have not these, some of the smaller herons, cranes, or egrets</p>

I have very few duplicates of these so far, and can scarcely offer you any, but as I wish to pay for what I want from you, as far as possibly, in specimens, I will mention that I can send you a well prepared skeleton of "{Emyoserrata" on a mahogany stand, and a number of "Unis spinoffs" that I am expecting shortly from the Altamaha river near Darien, Ga. I remember that when Isaw you at Rochester you said that you wanted some of those shells, and I hope that you have not yet been supplied. They used to be very valuable, but I am told that some enterprising collector has been down there and gathered up large numbers which have been thrown upon the market, and consequently the price has fallen. If you have any number of Units for sale and they are specified in one of your catalogues, I shall be glad to have a copy Very Respectfully G.E. Manigault [ybg]</p>
