I came home Saturday night having

been from home a week, I put up the birds at C.P. Museum and they seemed much pleased with them and wished the Irish Elk had been attended to at the same time. It is in a very bad condition, but I offered to do everything without any expense to them the same or with the mass for $200. If they decide to have it done will probably hear from them soon. Dr. Holder will I think send in a lot of 25 or 50 birds to be mounted. I told him we would do them at Bells prices which are cheaper than the prices we gave him. He thinks with a lot like that he can convince the trustees that it is better to pay our prices than Bell's, considering the difference in work. I saw Brickmore but a few moments when I first got there, He then ran up to Albany (as I learned afternoon) and did not come back while I was there. I was a little mad that he did not say more about what he was doing in our matter and think I will write him as soon as I get a moments time from other less important things. I went over to Brooklyn and saw Prof. Harper, He told a long story about a little unpleasantness in the school which made it unpleasant for him to speak to Mr. Pratt, and he did not want to rais money on a mortgage if it could be avoided, so I took his

He said if I had been a day later could have fixed everything . -that he sent for the money the day before. He said he would send a draft for half the amount in two or three days, but it has not come yet. He said he had expected to hear from us and had been busy &e.. or would have attended to it before. He was surprised at the small amount we took back, and objected to the large percentage taken off from casts for damage, but finally accepted it. And said he was much pleased with the cabinet and it looked much better than when he saw it in Rochester. Yesterday I completed sale of winged. Lion & Bull - we put up the two at Choutonguoy in July, and send also Rosetta Stone and Egyptian Isis and the Two other Asyrian figures for $425. I have written Prest. Allen telling him that if he ever wants them now is the time, we will give them boxed for $300. By the way I wonder if it wouldn't be a good plan to send them to San Fran- cisco? I talked up that question with Frank Ward and decided to go ahead. I couldn't see Lee without going down again, and I told Frank I couldn't spend so much time but would go right ahead, so there is no other way but you sell the shrimp we send you. So it looks now as if we should be making a big display there and with all these things our hands will be full. Have thus far sent about $400. more work to Cambridge than was planed for, but Mr. Baker writes you all this, and other shop news. They claim to be very much cramped for money at the office - Hooper, Scott; &e. not paying as expected. The bear </s from > you shipped from San F. has come and I did not send all the Antiquities to Mr. Collett.- The cost of bringing them from San F. was $10. instead of $2. as you reckoned. I think however he must be pleased with the lot. Have not heard a word from them since you left, so of course cases are not progressing. We shipped $95. worth of Insects and minerals to West Point today. Clarence King has resigned and Maj. Powell has been appointed director of the U.S. Gov. Survey. Have just put the first set of crypted models from Dennebegne today. The other two sets will be ready in a few days. Truly yours Edwin E Howell

tonight but here I am - came up the Rhine yesterday and put in here about 11.45 in the evening - got up early this morning and visited the castle and called on Mr Blotz to look over his stock and perhaps get a few things, but I found so many things we wanted, and at such low prices, that I kept picking out until dark ( stopping only a moment to drink some tea and eat a slice of bread) I got a great many little fossils by the bue-ful and a nice lot of Cerstites (50 in number) for 35 pfennigs each !! I selected in all for 500 marks worth which I am to send him after I get back to Rochester. It is nearly all for fossils. I should have selected some more minerals if it had remained light an hour longer. Now let me tell you something about what I did at Bern. - I worked hard there early and late for five days. I settled our old account with Sturtz by trading out the whole of our last bill ($154,) in cave bear skulls at 1/2 his old prices. the result is we now have </u 11 cave bear skulls & your

more than we need at present, but they are not bad property. I sold him meteorites oc. for 615 marks, from which we deducted 238 marks for the meteorites he sent us. I traded one slice of Cohohula iron for four large Solonhofer fish and a nice Scophites, besides this I selected of fossils </s no > the amount of 1506. marks and minerals net 394. Rocks 153. and four sets of wood crystal models 30. ^in^ each set at 20 marks each = 80. marks and some slides of fossils for 75 marks. I paid him 1000 marks, and am to send him a box - probably to balance acct. when I get back to Rochester, He of course does not want now the things he had written for before I came around. There is nothing specially remarkable in the things I got although there are a good many nice things and nothing but what is , I got a nice lot of Piedmont garnets very cheap - at about 1/3 the prices everyone else has them marked ( he got them in an old collection a while ago. I got some large good equrtins from Monte Bolsa. As these boxes will not reach Rochester long before I do I think it would be well to leave them until I come. I would like to see how they come through, how they are packed &c. I do not refer particularly to Mr. Sturtz - lot, but to all the shipments. I care less to see his lot opened than any other as I feel

I had to work hard to get this as cheap and could not have done so had I not already gotten consider- able of each - I traded Cohohula iron for 4 killos of Pulluck and Va. iron for a large piece - nearly 10 killos of Toluca. So we are now well suppled with those two kinds, but can afford to keep it at those prices. Dr. Brozina was regretting that he sold his Toluca to us so cheaply some years ago. I paid Dr. Krantz 1000. marks and we send them somethings - 10 lbs. of Hell fire rock for $19. They also want some Douconite, Brazilian Tourmolines, Japan stibnite - good cryelots - not large also Guonquctite, I think it better all wait however until I get home so I can not well write about it fully. Some things I got were not very cheap, but they were nice and we needed them. Mr. Sturtz received 1400 grams of the Alfianello Meteorite before I left Bonn, only a little of it had the crust on, He said it was non billed to him at 1000 franks and he seemed doubtful about accepting it. I am very sure I would not buy it at that rate. I have already written you that Joseph Rossi, Verolan- nova, Italy offered it to Mr Bregina for 500 & 400 live with & without crust. At Mr. Blotz today I saw a box containing an Ishthyvsourus already marked for Mr. Kunz. I think by the way we should have taken the topaz crystals he offered us, or at least half of them. I have seen but few thus far - all poor and very dear, we are fairly well supplied however without them As it is nearly midnight I think I had better get to bed. I go to Strasburg tomorrow and possibly on to Paris in the evening but more likely the next day. I shall hope to find letters from you all then. I have not recd. the April Bulletin Sincerely yours yet and you write me nothing about it I will write Moller to ship the boxes to Edwin E. Howell you and fix consoler invoices in the proper way according to your post instruction. [ybg]

Dear Prof,

It is getting late and I must to bed

as I leave in the morning for London - Your serious estimate of the time I would remain here was better than mine. You knew Paris and I did not. It now looks more as if you might be right in saying it will be July before I get home. however I will hurry as fast as it seems practicable. I have just written Alt Molller to ship all things in the usual way to Mr Lynch for you, and not to forget about omitting the word minerals from all shipping papers, and refered him to your previous instructions. A letter from him ten days ago says to him. I came from Munich 4 from Otto and 2 from Erber, Vienna 4 from Woppler 2 from Meine 6 from Blotz 4 from Krantz and his notion J 2 from Bertram and 1 from Bloschka. I wrote him to ship when sturtz-boxes arrived, and 3 from Pizon, which left here yesterday (unless in the mean time he had recd. word from you to the contrary) and I told him to

May '83 May 20 answer from 10,000 Annler. When I came from Pizon on me with things I got from him, and other things it took him to pack and one with your skeletons from Nemond, and one with </u Preuoria Antiquities > !! I did not think I could be led into buying any such thing but I ran across some good things so very cheap that I spent 300. franks mostly ornamental pots and a mummy. The trade I wrote you about with Deyrolle finally all fell through, when I came around to pay him he would not let me have most of the things the clerk had sold me - said they belonged to a collection that could not be broken The real reason I think was he sold them too cheap, so I got dis- posted and would take nothing - I had selected one ligomentey- pelvis for you. I will inclose Nemonds Bill and also Mills Mosting acct. I will straighten all this account matter out with you when I get home. It will be better if you do not give them to be entered until then. Moden Gosloff sends his compliments &: and Mille Morton says she is mad at you because you do not write to her. I have left money with her this evening to pay Bertrond so I leave no debts in Paris. Title
A name given to the resource
D258 Ward's Natural Science Establishment Addition (Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation, River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester)
Description
An account of the resource
This collection continues the history of Ward's Natural Science Establishment, Rochester, New York as started in the Henry Augustus Ward Papers (call number A.W23) and continued in the Ward's Natural Science Establishment Papers (call number D.231). While the first collection of the Establishment (D.231) concentrates on the history of Ward's from the 1950s through the 1980s, covering mostly the financial and business aspects of the company, particularly from the time when William C. Gamble was president of Ward's (1962 through 1980), this newest addition to the collection, while smaller in volume, is much broader in scope. It encompasses the history of Ward's from its earliest beginnings with Henry A. Ward in 1862 through the sale of the company in 1998. It also includes many historical materials on the extended Henry A. Ward Family.
The collection was donated to the University of Rochester on July 29, 1998, on behalf of Ward's Natural Science Establishment, Inc., by Kurt Gelke, current President of Ward's, and Kenneth G. Rainis, Vice-President of Biology. It is meant to supplement the original collection, despite its broader scope and chronology. Materials in this collection would be useful to historians of science, science education, business, Henry A. Ward and the Ward family, and the City of Rochester.
Organization of Collection:
Historical Material. Boxes 1-5. Printed materials from journals, magazines, and newspapers about the Establishment; Speeches and research on Ward's history; Collections, exhibits, and large projects conducted by Ward's; Building and site information; and product information.
Financial Reports and Business Records. Boxes 6-8. Financial statements of the company from the 1870's through the 1980's; Inventories; Annual reports; Business agreements; Purchase agreements; Customer invoices; Real estate appraisals and proposals; Legal consultations.
Employee Information. Boxes 9-10. Newspaper articles, special projects, obituaries, benefits, etc.
Correspondence. Boxes 11-16. Named correspondence including early Henry A. Ward letters written and received, Dean L. Gamble, William C. Gamble, and Ward Family correspondence; Business correspondence including customer letters, Jumbo research correspondence, and Mineral Department correspondence.
Ward Family Historical Material. Boxes 17-18. Includes information on Henry A. Ward, his second wife Lydia Avery Coonley Ward, his son Charles H. Ward, and grandson Roswell Ward.
Gamble Family Historical Material. Box 19. Dean L. Gamble and William C. Gamble, 1931-1981.
Printed Materials and Publications. Boxes 20-22. Ward's Price Lists, collection advertisements, announcements, circulars, guides, educational material; Company newsletters and handbooks; Materials from other establishments referencing Ward's as well as publications from other collectors and competitors; 1860's through 1990's. Ward's Price Lists, collection advertisements, announcements, circulars, guides, educational material; Company newsletters and handbooks; Materials from other establishments referencing Ward's as well as publications from other collectors and competitors; 1860's through 1990's. The collection contained many catalogs and other publications from Ward's Natural Science Establishment, dating from the 1860's through the 1990's, which have been separated from the rest of the collection and are to be catalogued.

are picking up some nice minerals and I
wish you might get them all in exchange
as you did the Meteorite you wrote me about
on the 17.. and also the one you wrote Henry
about. I have just heard today from Ft Lyon
Colo. from a man I wrote to about a Meteorite, that
he had sent it to Hidden - I guess it was a
genuine meteorite. - He described it in Scientific
American the 15 . . ?. I feared I would not reach
him in time and tried to telegraph but there was
no station at Ft. Lyon. But Hidden probably had it
secured before the article was published. The
Meteorites you have are probably ? or ?
are they not? If they are new ones they are?
very valuable. Of the slices cut from Bements
I sold two to Vienna ( which are paid for - $55.) one to
British Museum. 1 to Sturtz and 1 to Gregory, which
leaves us only one which is in two pieces. Have
also sold 8lb. Garnet to B. Museum for L 2. -10. -
and 4lb. one to Vienna for $5. and now we have

It is the largest Garnet I have ever heard of and is a good
one, unless they find more like it it will of course
be worth more. I felt that I must buy these
although I had to take money I had put aside to
finish paying for my lab next July. -Ward Howell
money is all gone and I am afraid there will
not be much coming in soon. I hope you will
not buy anything <s>unless</s> except such things as you
are very sure you ought to, unless you can pay
for it in exchange. I thought I could spare Antonio
before this time but a good many large things have
to be cast for Loucille and a good many things have to be
painted. I hope you are going to make some
good large sales before you leave Mexico - of course you
will not bring the casts home but exchange them for
what you can first, and , better exchange and pay much
more than pay cash, - we can spare material now but
are out of cash, and ? it seems to bad that when you are on
the ground you should not be able to buy all good things
that are offered cheap, but you can probably arrange for some
things, - in the future. Have you heard anything yet from
the Botany man? also from cheeseman? why ? he pay us?
Have been devoting a lot of time and expence to 200 crystal
models that were ordered for Sydney - they always make
me ? and cost more than they bring. Good luck attend you
very truly

Henry Augustus Ward Papers
A.W23
From 1862 to 1906, Ward’s Natural Science Establishment supplied specimens to natural science museums around the world. The goal of this project is to enable scientists, historians, and archivists to recreate Ward’s inventory by linking 19th century materials and documents at their institutions to the original catalogues, bulletins, and manuscripts.
Original line breaks, punctuation, abbreviations and spelling have been preserved
in the transcriptions and underlining and strikethroughs have been encoded.
Marginalia associated with a photograph or other ephemera has been transcribed
and associated with that object. Other marginalia is tagged "caption" at the
beginning of the relevant date's entry. Words or phrases deemed indecipherable
have been noted as "illegible." Nontextual original content, e.g. drawings and
diagrams, have been noted as such. Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.
