<pre> The shipment of specimens safely
</pre>
<p>to hand, & unpacked today. I return a few small specimens on account of quality, being either badly mounted or mounted from poor skins - I also return the Kangaroo, the order for which <u>was canceled,</u> as my memoranda show, <u>in March, 1883.</u> It was included by accident, we having already had one example from you of the same species. I also return the Black Vulture (<u>Calthaite atiatus</u>), which is a duplicate, the order having been long since filled. The <u>Corvus caurius</u> is a finely mounted bird, but is not the <u>true</u> courinus which is a bird of the N. W. coast. The long decurved tip to the bill is due to malformation. The Meadow Lark is in immature plumage & has a defective tail. Very ty yours J. A. Allen</p>

<p>nwh Cambridge May 10, 1879. Dear Prof. Ward,</p>
<pre> The last shipment

<p>came a day or two since & has been unpacked & passed in review - The birds, the turtles & the mammals - in short - everything - except the Bear came safely. The Bear unfortunately was fastened by only one screw, & that chanced to have not a very firm holding - place, so that when the box containing it was opened he was found to be completely loose - & had evidently made most of the journey that way. The hair was worn off a small place on the top of the back at the shoulders, & one (the left) ear ^was^ ground off nearly even with his head. In other respects he seemed</p>

It was evidently just pinned on, & how, when or where it was lost I have no idea - whether here, during the journey, or at the time it was packed in Rochester - It is one of the little birds that came fastened to strips of wood. <p>nwh July 5, 1883 Dear Prof. Ward -</p>
<pre> Yours of July 2 3d July re'cd.
</pre>
<p>I did not write about the <u>Orca</u> because I under- stood from your first letter on the subject that you had also written Mr. Agassiz about it, & I now learn from Miss Clark that he sent you a letter on Tuesday (July 3).</p>
<pre> As to other matters, I am sure that the three
</pre>
<p>Hovo skeletons are all from you & that one came much earlier (2 or 3 years perhaps) than your first date (Sept. 13, 1880). Will look up the matter and report later.</p>
<pre> Our Bats are still at Philadelphia in Dr. H.
</pre>
<p>Allen's hands. We have ample material for skeletons & will have it sent you as soon as practicable. Am glad you referred to the matter.</p>
<pre> We have room for the ? Gorilla - & I am
</pre>
<p>pleased to hear you have it.</p>
<pre> As to Walrus, the passageways are same

<p>in size as those through which the elephant passed.</p>

<p>so there will probably be no trouble. Yet as it will have to be carried upstairs by men, perhaps it would be better not to position the Walrus to its pedestal, so that the two can be taken up sepa- rately.</p>
<pre> In regard to the Nelson collection, will
</pre>
<p>send list shortly. I have written twice to Mr. Cowles & get no answer. He is a roving fellow & my letters may not have reached him. So I shall now write directly to Nelson, who is in Colorado. As I ought to wait for his answer, it may be several weeks before I can send you final advise. Very truly yours J. A. Allen Probably you are smiling over a big cheque from here by this time !</p>

Henry Augustus Ward Papers
A.W23
From 1862 to 1906, Ward’s Natural Science Establishment supplied specimens to natural science museums around the world. The goal of this project is to enable scientists, historians, and archivists to recreate Ward’s inventory by linking 19th century materials and documents at their institutions to the original catalogues, bulletins, and manuscripts.
Original line breaks, punctuation, abbreviations and spelling have been preserved
in the transcriptions and underlining and strikethroughs have been encoded.
Marginalia associated with a photograph or other ephemera has been transcribed
and associated with that object. Other marginalia is tagged "caption" at the
beginning of the relevant date's entry. Words or phrases deemed indecipherable
have been noted as "illegible." Nontextual original content, e.g. drawings and
diagrams, have been noted as such. Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

<p>Dear Prof. Ward,</p>
<pre> Your last shipment received
</pre>
<p>yesterday. Everything coam safely & I am</p>
<pre>glad to see that the specimens average
</pre>
<p>better than usual.</p>
<pre> The </uEucalyptus shepocoma > I should like
</pre>
<p>to keep, as it is quite different from the other & I doubt very much if it is the same species.</p>
<pre> I do not find <?u Chirernales torquatus >
</pre>
<p>charged on the bill, nor the </u Merops, > which ^to replace another^ I notice is marked "Duplicate". In other respects the specimens sent agree with the bill.</p>

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.

mentioned are additional to those in
our collection, it would be well
to consult me in respect to any
substitutions so as not to duplicate
things we already have. The Bats

<p>Your last shipment received yesterday. Everything came safely & I am glad to see that the specimens average better than usual.</p>
<p>The [??] I should like to keep, as it is quite different from the other & I dougt very much if it is the same species.</p>
<p>I do not find [Chinomeles Torquatus?] charged on the bill, nor the Merops, which [inserted in pencil: to replace another] I notice is marked "duplicate." In other respects the specimens sent agree with the bill.</p>

Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation
Images of the original diary pages are
provided to show the creator’s original page layout and placement of
additions.
